[Dancer Post] My Newest Identity Obsession

Editor's Note: This week features a follow up reflection from Sarah Chien, one of the extraordinary dancers and artistic collaborators who is bringing this dance to life. When we brought a new dancer into the cast, Allegra Romita, along with noticing other conversations on mixed-race, we realized "What are you?" is not so uncommon a question.

After my post entitled "My Mixed Ass," I've been getting a lot of positive feedback from family and friends with similar experiences. This clip introduces Kip Fulbeck and his Hapa Project. Evidently "What are you?" isn't just something that happens to me. It's a pretty common question for hapa, or mixed race people. Kip's done a whole photography project challenging the "what are you" question and also inherently highlighting the visual body assumptions we make when judging a person at first glance. He hits Window Sex right on the nail around 1:50 in the clip!
