NOW is the time for ACTION!

When I started this project, I reached out to allies and found that I was not the only one who felt a deep need to take action against street harassment. Each person and organization who I came into contact with was deeply passionate about working to end harassment. Before I knew it, I was swept up in a movement and am now calling myself activist - as I dance in action to spread awareness around the issue.

I am thrilled to be premiering my first evening length dance work as a part of this movement. We are one of more than 100 organizations and activists from 18 countries participating in hundreds of events across the world during March 18-24 for the International Anti-Street Harassment Week. During International Anti-Street Harassment Week, community members, activists, students, and bloggers will join forces to speak out about gender-based street harassment -- catcalls, sexist comments, flashing, groping, stalking, and assault -- and work toward solutions.

Below you'll find the times, dates, and locations for events taking place in New York City as well as other ways for you to participate on your own.

* Tuesday March 20 from 4:00-5:00PM, Self-defense class for pre-teen women at the Langston Hughes Library in Flushing, Queens 100-01 Northern Blvd (Tracy Hobson and the Center for Anti-Violence Education) http://www.caeny.org/

In honor of the event, recording artist BLAKE (http://www.blakemusic.com/) will be performing and plans to release her music video for the song "Creepin" she wrote about street harassment. $5 at the door. * Friday, March 23 from 7:30PM-9:30PM, The Window Sex Project at The Red Carpet Theater at Taino Towers, 240 East 123rd Street, NY, NY 10035. The World Premiere of this amazing performance addresses and tackles the every day practice in which women are “window shopped,” that is forced to bear unsolicited verbal harassment from men while walking on the street. Through community workshops and choreographed performance, The Window Sex Project will give voice to these concerns and restore agency to women by equipping them to manage street harassment, celebrating their bodies and creating a public artwork, specifically a dance performance which takes place in an art gallery. http://www.windowsexprojectpremiere.eventbrite.com/
