A Preview

With our upcoming showing, the dancers and I have been talking a lot about costuming -- an oh so important aspect of the work when the topic at hand is about being profiled and harassed on the street based on looks.
The opening section of the work is about "window shopping" bodies, so we are playing with what makes our bodies look the most appealing, appetizing, and valuable in the market of public spaces.  Essentially, how can we look the most sexy? And what's more sexy than the timeless pin-up girl?
Sex in our culture is acknowledged and sanctioned in FANTASTICAL ways (pornography, provocative Halloween costumes, airbrushed magazine photos, strip clubs, Barbie dolls etc.), but is taboo in a REAL HUMAN WAY (between bodies, with our own bodies, understanding of our own sexualities). At what point does the pin-up girl become human? At what point do the movable parts become flesh and blood? When do we recognize the brains that think and the hearts that emote?
